The Volunteer Center
Our Mission: The Volunteer Center serving Western CT is the leader in strengthening our communities by connecting people to volunteer service and providing resources and support to nonprofit organizations. The Volunteer Center impacts the community through its Comprehensive Volunteer Services Program which recruits, matches and refers volunteers who want to share their skills, talents and time with non-profit human service agencies; provides volunteer management training workshops and recruits, trains and deploys board members to area non-profits; its Western CT Business Volunteer Council (BVC) convenes area businesses to promote employee volunteerism and sponsors projects to benefit children and families; its Court-based Community Service Program places individuals into the non-profit sector to make reparation by giving back to their community. Monthly board meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday evening of each month.

 

Child and Family Institute of Fairfield Country (Formerly the C.A.R.D Foundation)
The Child and Family Institute exists to provide the skills necessary for children and adolescents with attention, learning, emotional, and behavioral disorders to succeed in home, school, work, and community settings. Through family-centered counseling and experiential education, they provide consistent and coordinated opportunities for high-risk youth to reach their academic and social potential, develop their sense of personal worth, and affirm their ability to be contributing members of society and lifelong learners. The Board of Directors is looking to expand its current board. The Institute works to provide a therapeutic summer wilderness camp for children between the ages of 6-16 with attention, learning, emotional and behavioral disorders. They are currently looking for individuals who possess concern for our community's youth.

 

Community Action Committee of Danbury (CACD)
Mission: To help low-income individuals and families to achieve self-sufficiency and to eradicate poverty. CACD strives for the realization of the full economic and social potential of the poor, whereby every citizen may have the opportunity to contribute to the full extent of his/her capabilities and to participate in the workings of our society. Looking for board members who will participate in fund development, strategic planning, organizational design, human resources, financial oversight, and program and facilities review. Meetings are the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 5:30 pm during the months of January, March, May, July, September, and November.

 

Connecticut Ballet
Mission: The presentation of professional ballet throughout Connecticut and the provision of educational
dance programs to mainstream and at-risk youth in communities across the state. Their offices are in Stamford and Hartford. Board members are responsible for planning and oversight, networking with other community groups and individuals, and assisting in fundraising initiatives and special events. There is a mandatory minimum personal gift of $250 required of each board member to the organization. In return, members are entitled to up to six tickets to the company's performances during the course of each season for promotional or networking purposes. The board meets quarterly plus committee meetings as needed, and for a daylong summer planning retreat.

 

Connecticut Choral Society
The Connecticut Choral Society is a non-profit arts organization in its 29th year of operation. The current Board of Trustees has six members. To function more effectively, they are seeking four to six additional trustees to direct the operations and future of the Connecticut Choral Society. Skills in the areas of planning, finance, management, human resources and governance are needed. The board usually meets 9-12 times a year. Committee work beyond the board meetings is expected. Prior non-profit board experience and/or experience with arts organization is preferred.

 

Danbury Animal Welfare Society (DAWS)
Mission Statement: Danbury Animal Welfare Society is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to improving the lives of animals in our community and beyond. Founded in 1974, DAWS provides shelter and care to animals in need, offers adoption counseling to place their loving animals in forever homes, promotes responsible pet guardianship and humane treatment of animals, and works toward ending animal overpopulation through education, spay/neuter and trap, neuter and return programs. The Board meets monthly on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 7-9 pm. Annual membership plus participation in two major fundraisers are required.

 

Danbury Concert Association
Mission Statement: We are a non-profit self-supporting organization managed by a volunteer Board of Directors. We're dedicated to enriching the cultural life of Danbury, Connecticut, and the surrounding area, by offering a series of 4 concerts featuring well-known professional musicians every year. Music Lovers are being sought out to serve on the Board of Directors. Directors participate in meetings held the 1st Tuesday of each month at 7:45 pm. The Board works to plan and promote their Concert series, annual membership campaign and organizational governance.

 

Danbury Regional Child Advocacy Center
Mission Statement: Danbury Regional Child Advocacy Center is an organization dedicated to protecting children through supporting and empowering families. They seek to prevent child abuse through: intervention with families at risk for child abuse and neglect; education of families, other agencies and the community; and coordination/collaboration of the delivery of services for the protection of children. DRCAC is seeking Greater Danbury, particularly New Milford area residents from within the Hispanic community, to join their board. Members attend monthly meetings (the 2nd Wednesday of September through June at 8 am). Board Members participate in fund development events and serve on at least one committee. There are annual dues of $25.

 

Danbury Schools and Business Collaborative
The Danbury Schools and Business Collaborative is an organization sanctioned by the Danbury Board of Education, that fosters cooperation among businesses, the community, and Danbury Public Schools. Its charter is to promote lifelong learning and the successful transition of youth into society and the workforce. Their key program is The Mentor Program, which helps 500 children each year. The Board meets monthly from August through May on Tuesday mornings at 8 am at a designated Danbury school. Active Board members are needed to engage in discussion and participation on committees. It is helpful, but not necessary, for candidates to be connected to the Danbury business community.

 

Danbury Youth Services
Danbury Youth Services strengthens youth and families by supporting and fostering hope and teaching the skills necessary to lead positive and productive lives. Danbury Youth Services is a private, non-profit agency designated as the Youth Service Bureau for the City of Danbury. This agency provides professional counseling and support services through prevention, intervention, treatment, and aftercare. The direct service staff is comprised of licensed clinicians and prevention specialists with expertise in the areas of substance abuse prevention, parenting, crisis intervention, juvenile delinquency, and family therapy. Board members from the Danbury area are needed to attend monthly meetings on the last Monday of the month at 4:30 pm. Each board member is asked to participate in two fundraising events and serve on one committee.

 

Dream Come True of Western Connecticut
Founded in 1984, Dream Come True of Western Connecticut fulfills the dreams of seriously, chronically and terminally ill children in Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven Counties. To help them achieve their mission of granting dreams to children under the age of 18, participation in the Board includes fundraising, organizational support, locating deserving children and helping fulfill their dreams. Attendance at board meetings on the 4th Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00 pm each month is required.

 

Families Network of Western CT, Inc
The Families Network of Western CT, Inc. is an organization dedicated to ensuring that all families, especially those facing the greatest challenges, receive the support they may need in order to get their children off to a healthy and happy start by establishing healthy family relationships, improving child development and health outcomes, reducing the risk of abuse and neglect and preparing children for healthy, responsible productive lives. Residents from the Greater Danbury area with an interest in strengthening families through education and support are encouraged to become Board members. Board member responsibilities include attending monthly meetings, special events, fundraising, strategic planning and assistance and oversight of organizational development. Monthly meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month from 8-9 am.

 

Healing the Children, Northeast
Healing the Children is a non-profit, non-partisan, volunteer organization with a 501(c)(3) I.R.S. tax exemption. Their purpose is to help children throughout the world receive medical care unavailable to them due to a lack of medical and financial resources or health insurance. The Stateside Program has treated 5000 children alone. Healing the Children locates doctors and hospitals in the U.S. who are willing to donate their services, provides host family homes for the children when they are not in the hospital, and provides round trip airfare (which includes an escort) for each child. Board members attend monthly meetings on the 3rd Monday of the month from 6-8 pm, assist in agency fundraising, participate in ongoing strategic planning processes and participate on board committees as needed.

 

Housatonic Habitat for Humanity
Housatonic Habitat for Humanity is people working in partnership to build homes with the inadequately sheltered, creating self-reliant families and enriched communities. They provide decent, affordable housing to families in need, regardless of race, religion, gender and age. Meetings are held every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm.

 

Hunt Hill Farm Trust
The Mission of the Hunt Hill Farm Trust is to preserve the farm’s land, environment, buildings and archives, promote public awareness of its unique history, celebrate Americana in music, art and literature, provide educational opportunities for children and adults, to share the rich life and legacy of Skitch and Ruth Henderson. They are seeking new members who share in their mission of music, art, cuisine and preservation and have a vision for the future. Meetings are held every two months on Thursday beginning in February at 5 pm.

 

Interlude, Inc.
Interlude, Inc provides housing, support services and advocacy to people with mental illness to help them become more independent in their community. They accomplish this through residential programs with home like environments where 24 hour on-site staff is available and through Outreach programs in which case managers visit clients in their own homes. Experience or interest in the mental health and nonprofit areas are necessary. Board Members meet every other month for a full Board meeting, officers meet monthly and various committee meetings are held as needed. The Board works with the Executive Director to guide the agency, build funds, and develop strategic plans. Interlude is looking for candidates with experience in finance, fundraising or marketing. Each Board Member contributes financially to the agency's cause, helps build donor relationships, as well as, plan fundraising events.

 

Military Museum of Southern New England
The Military Museum is seeking new members for their Board of Directors. The museum is a fully-functional organization with a network of volunteers, donors, docents, events, gift store and staff. It operates under the leadership of an 11-person Board of Directors, most of whom helped the Museum start up in 1985. The Museum is dedicated to the preservation of our nation’s military history. Past military involvement is not a requirement for serving on the Board.

 

Newtown Youth & Family Services
Mission Statement: Newtown Youth & Family Services, Inc. is a licensed, nonprofit, mental health clinic and youth service bureau dedicated to helping children and families achieve their highest potential. They provide programs, services, activities, counseling, support groups and education throughout the Greater Newtown area regardless of ability to pay. They are looking for Board Members who will promote their mission, to participate in fundraising; set and implement agency strategy; serve on committees; participate in NYFS functions and represent them in the community. There is a financial commitment. The Board meets 4th Monday each month at 6:30 pm – There are no meetings in July, August and December.

 

Trinity Productions
Trinity Productions, Mind, Body and Spirit Learning Center are seeking Board members to help create an outstanding organization for the community. They are looking for open minded and growth oriented community members. Trinity is a nonprofit organization designed to inspire and promote the highest level of personal growth of Spirit, mind and body through creative and interactive educational programs. They are an interfaith organization and welcome all. They also sponsor metaphysical, spiritual, and holistic classes, workshops and events for personal growth.

 

WeCAHR
WeCAHR advocates for the civil and human rights of people with disabilities. They work to create and promote personal success, independence, and community involvement. Greater Danbury area residents are requested to be Board Members. The Board participates in organizing fundraisers, attending events, setting policy and has fiscal oversight of the organization. Monthly meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 5:30 pm. Membership is required with donations given within individual’s financial capacity.
